#Osunundecided:Fani-Koyode Lampoons Omisore, Accuses Him of Receiving "Bribe" to Aid APC

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has criticized the gubernatorial candidate of Social Democratic Party,SDP, Senator Iyiola Omisore, for accepting to work with APC to win the keenly contested Osun State Governorship election. Mr. Fani-Kayode accused Mr. Omisore of betrayal. In his words on his Twitter handle:
"Iyiola Omisore's decision to support the APC in tomorrow's rerun is shameful. It is sad that he would seek to deny Ile-Ife the position of Dep. Gov simply for money. He told me he would stand firm 2 days ago and he told our father Baba Ayo Adebanjo the same thing last night.....I do not know what has turned his head but we shall forge ahead and by God's grace Adeleke will win. There is no excuse or justification for joining or supporting those who treated our people like filth and slaves over the last 8 years  and who rigged last Saturday's election."

Osun rerun: We will resist any form of conspiracy against Adeleke – Kwankwaso warns INEC

The lawmaker representing Kano Central Senatorial District and presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic, PDP, Senator Rabi’u Kwankwaso, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to be fair in the conduct of the Thursday’s rerun election in Osun State.

The presidential aspirant warned that any form of conspiracy against Senator Ademola Adeleke of the PDP would be resisted.

Kwankwaso in a statement by his Media Aide, Binta Spikin said, “It is important that we stay strong and stand by Senator Adeleke and our great party, PDP, on Thursday.

“Let me also make this clear that we will resist any form of conspiracy against our candidate.

“I am calling on INEC to be just, fair and transparent.”

Recall that INEC declared Osun election inconclusive after difference between the two leading parties, the PDP and the All Progressives Congress, was lower than the number of the votes cancelled.

Adeleke of PDP from the collation of all the results from the 30 council areas of the state, had 254,698 while the candidate of APC, Gboyega Oyetola, polled 254,345.

PDP Appoints Okowa As Chairman Of Convention Planning Committee

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has appointed the Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as the chairman of the Special National Convention Planning Committee, ahead of the 2019 elections.

Deputy National Chairman of the party, Yomi Akinwunmi, inaugurated the committee on behalf of the chairman of the party, Uche Secondus at the National Secretariat in Abuja.

Okowa while thanking the party chairman and officials for the appointment assured of a free, fair and acceptable convention.

“I thank the National Working Committee and members of our party for finding us worthy to serve in this Committee.

“All of us believe that the party should remain united and focused, what is needed is a free and fair primaries to be conducted for all our aspirants, no matter where the venue is, we will do what is right and no one will have reason to complain; we believe we are capable of doing the work.

“The international community wants to see the process that will lead to the emergence of the next President of Nigeria that is why we have chosen a man of integrity, a man of pedigree to work with reputable, tested and trusted men of our party to organise the Convention.”

Kwankwaso sneaks into Kano, asks for calm, begs supporters to support son-in-law as governor

Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Monday sneaked into the ancient city of Kano where he addressed his supporters at his Milla Road residence in Kano metropolis.

Many of his supporters were not aware of his arrival in Kano as the trip was not announced.

The former Governor, who is a presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had recently endorsed his son-in law, Abba Kabir Yusuf as his choice for 2019 governorship seat, an action that irked some of his followers.

However, Kwankwaso appealed to his followers to remain calm.

“I’m in Kano to see you and say thank you for the brotherhood and progressive unity we enjoy as Kwankwasiyya members. Certainly, we will sit and talk on vital issues affecting us”, NAN quoted him as saying.

The lawmaker explained that his choice of Abba Kabir Yusuf was necessary because most of his projects including the famous Kano Kofar Nassarawa flyover were designed and executed by Yusuf.

“Today most of the projects being executed by Ganduje are not durable and of low standard while huge amount of money was being spent on them.

“But our projects, which mostly were designed and executed by Abba Kabir Yusuf are today standing firm in Kano,” he said.

Kwankwaso, who spent only one hour in Kano, told his supporters who thronged his house that he was willing to sit with them and iron things out.

“If not for the fact that I’m busy and rushing back to Abuja for the Presidential screening going on right now, I would have loved to sit and discuss vital issues with you”, he said.

He promised to return in the next few weeks to resolve some of the issues on the forthcoming elections in 2019.

Among his loyalists at the meeting were: former Chief of Staff and Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr Yunusa Dangwani, Abba Kabir Yusuf, a former Commissioner of Works as well as Aminu Abdulsalam, his former commissioner of State Affairs.

We have discovered 4,387 votes removed by INEC from our ballots – PDP

As varied reactions trailed the declaration of last Saturday’s governorship poll in Osun inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, on Monday night said shocking discovery had indicated no fewer than 4,387 votes were allegedly removed by the electoral body from the total ballots polled by the opposition party.

Addressing a press conference in Ede, the South West zonal secretary of the PDP, Reverend Bunmi Jenyo said thorough investigation has revealed that the PDP was allegedly shortchanged by INEC through the summation of votes in Olorunda and Osogbo local government councils by allotting more votes to the All Progressives Congress (APC) than what the party garnered during the poll.

According to Jenyo, details obtained from Form EC 8C showed that in Olorunda local government, the total votes polled by the APC was 14, 867, while INEC recorded 16,254 votes for the ruling party, indicating that 1,387 additional votes we’re allotted to the APC.

He further alleged that similar scenario played out in Osogbo local government, where the actual votes polled by the APC stood at 21, 479, adding that on contrary INEC recorded 23, 379 votes for the party.

Jenyo, however added that INEC recorded 14, 499 for the PDP instead of 14, 599, just as he said the total votes of the PDP was reduced by 1,000 in Ayedaade local government.

Osun decides: Gov. Aregbesola reveals what’ll happen during re-run election

The Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, has expressed optimism that the All Progressives Congress, APC, will win the next Thursday’s rerun election.

Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, led the race with 254,698 votes, 353 votes more than that of Gboyega Oyetola of the APC.

The margin was, however, less than the 3,498 votes in the polling units where voting were cancelled.

Consequently, the Returning Officer for the election, Professor Joseph Afuape, declared the poll inconclusive.

Aregbesola, who spoke through his Media Adviser, Mr. Sola Fasure, on Sunday, said “We expect to win at the first ballot.

“We believe in the rule of law and due process and as democrats, we will abide by INEC’s decision, it is okay by us.

“If there was no cancellation in those areas, we would have won outrightly without the need for the rerun.”

2019: Again APC reschedules presidential primary

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has rescheduled its presidential primary from September 25 to September 27.

The party made this known in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, Sunday night.

“The presidential direct primary election earlier scheduled for Tuesday, September 25th, 2018 will now hold on Thursday, September 27th, 2018.”

The governing party had last week earlier reviewed its dates for primaries.

From the previously reviewed time table, the primaries were to hold as follows: September 25 – Presidential Primary Election, September 29- Governorship Primary Election, October 2 – Senate Primary Elections, October 3 – House of Representatives Primary Elections, October 4 – State House of Assembly Primary Elections and October 6 – the National Convention for the Presidential primary.

Though the party did not change the dates for other primaries, its new date for the presidential primary is same as that of the Osun governorship re-run.

The Osun governorship election held September 22 was declared inconclusive Sunday afternoon because, according to the returning officer, the difference between the two leading parties, APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was less than the total number of votes cancelled. The PDP, after final collation in Osun led its closest challenger, APC, by 353 votes while 3,498 votes were cancelled.

Mr Nabena, however, told PREMIUM TIMES that the fact both the presidential primary and Osun re-run election hold same day will not be a problem.

“It won’t be an issue because when you look at the local government affected for the Osun re-run they are just few so it’s not going to be an issue.”

The party also announced that duly registered party members can now collect their permanent membership cards from their respective wards.

President Muhammadu Buhari is the only presidential aspirant to have purchased the APC form at the N45 million price fixed by the party.

Osun election: Tinubu, Aregbesola, APC’s political reign for ‘burial’ Thursday – Fani-Kayode

Femi Fani-Kayode, former Minister of Aviation, on Sunday said the final result of the Osun State governorship election was the beginning of the funeral rites of Bola Tinubu, a National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The former Minister said Tinubu, alongside the outgoing governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola’s political reign will be defeated entirely at the rerun on Thursday, September 27.

Fani-Kayode wrote on his Twitter page: “The result of the Osun State election is the beginning of the political funeral rites of: Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Rauf Aregbesola and the APC.

“The final burial will be on Thursday 27th September 2018 when the @OfficialPDPNig’s Demola Adeleke reclaims his stolen mandate.”

Meanwhile, INEC announced that the rerun of the Osun governorship election, which it earlier declared “inconclusive”, will now hold on Thursday, September 27, 2018.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate, Ademola Adeleke led with a total votes of 254, 698 while Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress, APC, however polled a total of 254,345 to come second in the keenly contested election.

Seek legal redress on INEC declaration, Saraki tells PDP, Adeleke

The President of the Senate and Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party’s Presidential Council on Osun State Governorship Election, Dr Bukola Saraki, has faulted the declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission that the results of the election held on Saturday were inconclusive.

Saraki, in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, expressed dismay over the decision by INEC to declare as “inconclusive” an election in which a candidate won the highest number of votes and fulfilled the condition for the geographical spread.

The Senate President advised the PDP and its governorship candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke, to seek a legal interpretation of the situation with the results and the decision taken by INEC on it.

He said, “In my layman’s opinion, INEC was wrong in declaring the election as inconclusive because the votes in certain polling units were cancelled. The decision of INEC to cancel the election in those areas after voting had taken place means INEC had already excluded the votes in these areas from the election process and therefore those units should have no place in the overall results.

“My opinion would have been different if the election in the affected units did not take place at all, maybe as a result of malfunctioning of the card reader machine or unavailability of the electoral materials. Since the voting took place and was cancelled, only the courts could reverse the initial decision by INEC to cancel the votes in these areas.

“That is why I call on our party and its candidate to seek a further legal interpretation on this decision by the electoral body. One cannot but wonder whether if the places were reversed and the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress was the one leading in the election, the INEC would take the same decision it has taken now.”

Saraki stated that it was necessary to also call on INEC to display “courage, boldness, independence, neutrality and patriotism” in order to send signals to the world at large that Nigeria’s electoral system had come of age and that its democracy had matured.

CONSPIRACY:2019: How APC govt plans to weaken PDP through INEC, EFCC – Wike

Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike has said that the pact between the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to monitor campaign finances ahead of the 2019 election was part of federal government’s plan to weaken the opposition.

Wike told the media at Government House, Port Harcourt, yesterday, that APC states have never been probed since 2015.

He said: “EFCC working with INEC to investigate campaign finances is merely a smokescreen. It is targeted at the opposition party.

“When have you heard that EFCC would come up to say, as regards the ruling party, funds came from the government. I will not be carried away by the so-called EFCC investigation.

“The fund they want to investigate is only when it has to do with the opposition states. Take for example, EFCC said PDP spent money in the last 2015 elections.

“Has EFCC investigated those states that were APC, like Rivers State at that time that funded part of their election. Who is deceiving who? EFCC is only working to witch-hunt the opposition.”

Wike said desperate rigging moves on August 18, 2018 at the Port Harcourt State Constituency 3 elections showed that the APC is not ready for elections.

“Through the Port Harcourt State Constituency 3 election, they revealed to us what they planned for 2019. They don’t want election. They want to use security to rig,” he claimed.

CONFUSION:Stella Oduah dumps APGA, returns to PDP

Stella Oduah, the Senator representing Anambra North, has returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Oduah had defected to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in June.

But in a statement released by her media office on Friday, Oduah said she discovered that APGA’s ideology was a mirage.

The former Aviation Minister said she felt the party “had sound ideological leanings native to Igboland”.

The statement reads: “Politics has always been about ideology and delivering service to the people for me, because I believe leadership is all about solving problems.

“Political platforms must afford members unfettered opportunity to participate in the electoral process and to solve the problems of their community, constituency and state.

“I joined APGA because I thought it had sound ideological leanings native to Igboland. But my ideological expectations were a mirage. I discovered that internal democracy, which will guarantee justice, fairness and equity, was also not in practice in the party.

“After due consultations and with respect to my religious beliefs, I announce that PDP remains the vehicle through which I will keep fulfilling my mandate to the people of Anambra North.”

Nigerian Soldier kills colleague, shoots self dead, injures four

Two staff sergeants of the Nigerian Army, identified as Adegor Okpako and Saka, have been killed and four others injured in an incident at the 192 Battalion in the Gwoza area of Borno State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident occurred around 3pm on Wednesday during what was referred to as in-theatre training in the army base.

However, while some people claimed that Okpako deliberately killed Saka and injured four others before committing suicide, the Nigerian Army said it was a case of accidental discharge.

A source said Okpako came to the army base two days before and embarked on a random shooting, adding that the four injured personnel were three soldiers and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force.

The Nigerian Army confirmed the incident on its Twitter page, saying the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, had ordered a board of enquiry to investigate the incident.

The Army said, “Accidental discharge kills two soldiers. We deeply regret to announce the death of two soldiers of the 192 Battalion, who lost their lives as a result of an accidental discharge during in-theatre training on Wednesday.

“The Chief of Army Staff has directed the Commander, 26 Brigade, Gwoza, to immediately constitute a board of inquiry to unravel the circumstances that led to this unfortunate situation.”

Some Nigerians on Twitter demanded that the army disclose the truth of the matter and the identities of the deceased soldiers.

One Onyefu Osaosu said the Army was not telling the truth, adding that pellets were usually used during training.

Another poster, Eustace Njoku, said, “Why are they using live ammunition during training, how can that be possible?  Is it how the Nigerian Armed Forces train?”

One Ajegun said uniformed men deserved to be celebrated when they die in the line of duty to boost the morale of those still serving.

“This is highly dismissive of a soldier who threw his life into the rings for this nation. Please mention their names, upload their pictures, show them some respect and appreciate them for the times they showed devotion and loyalty in service. Is Nigeria really worth dying for?” another user, Emmanuel Shebbs, said.

One Nkem, said, “We would appreciate names please; to show we honour them as individuals, not as numbers. We also would appreciate names of those killed by terrorists. They deserve that honour. Even military dogs in the West are recognised by names.”

A Twitter user, Nonso Ikeh, urged the Nigerian Army to put measures in place to forestall a recurrence.

“Accidental discharge during in-theatre training is another way of saying that soldier suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder due to the incompetence of the army hierarchy shot at colleagues perceived to be receiving favours,” another Nigerian, Baba Yaga, said.

Kwankwaso Confident Of PDP’s Victory In 2019 Elections

The Senator representing Kano-Central in the National Assembly, Rabiu Kwankwaso, says he is confident that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would emerge victorious in the 2019 general elections.

Speaking on Friday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, he explained that the party’s chance of victory is high based on the number of aspirants in the presidential race compared to that of 2015.

He said, “In 2015, PDP had only one candidate and it lost the election. If you look at it statistically, from 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011, PDP had very competitive (aspirants) at primary elections and was winning the general elections in those election years. But in 2015, it decided to print only one form for one person and it lost the election”.

‘Never Thought An Incumbent Could Lose’
Kwankwanso who is also a presidential aspirant in the PDP blamed his party’s defeat in the 2015 general elections on impunity.

According to him, it was for that reason that many of its members defected to the then opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

He, however, explained that the party has learnt its lessons the hard way and is better prepared for next year’s general elections.

“PDP, in my opinion, learnt its lessons. In 2015, PDP was very arrogant and believed that whatever happens, they would win the elections.

“They never thought that an incumbent could lose the election. They had at that time, some level of impunity that many of us felt that was not the best way to handle the government, the party and of course the country.

“That was why we decided to defect to the APC, mobilised the people and at the end of the day, we won the election,” he said.

The former Kano State Governor is optimistic that whoever emerges as the PDP’s presidential candidate would get the support of other aspirants to wrest power from the APC next year.

29-year-old student kills self for being unable to pay school fees

A 29-year-old student, identified as Philip Chinedu, of Nwafor-Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe, in Anambra East Local Government Area, has reportedly committed suicide over his inability to pay school fees.

According to the Punch, the deceased who was a 200-level student of the college, was found dead on Thursday at about 8.40pm in his apartment outside the school campus.

His friend, who pleaded anonymity, said Chinedu had complained about the high tuition fees which he doesn’t know how he’ll pay as the deadline for payment was close.

The friend said, “No suicide note was found on him, but I think he was sad recently over his inability to meet up with payment of school fees and such sundry issues.’’

Confirming the incident, the police public relations officer, Haruna Mohammed, stated that men of the command arrived at the scene immediately they got the news of the suicide.

Mohammed said, “One Obinna Joseph, a student of the College of Education Nsugbe, reported that on same date at about 8pm, he returned to his hostel, which is off-campus at Nsugbe and found his roommate hanged dead on the ceiling fan inside the room.

“Upon the receipt of the complaint, the scene was visited by police detectives attached to the 3.3 Division led by the DPO, CSP Sunday Irek, and the victim was taken to Apex Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.”

We must not toy with 2019 elections – Saraki

Senate President Bukola Saraki has urged Nigerians not to play with the 2019 general elections, saying the nation is at crossroads.

Saraki, a People’s Democratic Party’s presidential aspirant stated this yesterday  in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, during his consultative visits to party’s members to solicit their support ahead of the party’s presidential primary.

He said: “Let us not play with the coming election, because the country is at a very critical point, Nigeria is at a crossroads, people all over are divided, lack of unity everywhere, people do not feel the sense of the government.

“We want a president that will unite Nigeria, we want a president that will ensure that everybody is on the table on equal basis, we want a president that will make sure that everybody is on the front roll, not the one that will put some at the front and some at the back, we want a president that has the capacity to rule.

“Nigerians will be proud to have a president that is politician and democrat who will ensure justice and fair play in the system, a president that will ensure that appointments come from all sections of the country.”

Wike to Ambode: Defy your godfather, Tinubu

“If it is correct that the godfather is against Ambode, I will tell him (Ambode) to resist it. I will tell him to promote the interest of his state.”
Tony John, Port Harcourt

As the political drama in Lagos State linger, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has advised Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to call the bluff of his godfather, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Speaking in Port Harcourt, yesterday, Wike said: “If it is correct that the godfather is against Ambode, I will tell him (Ambode) to resist it. I will tell him to promote the interest of his state. Godfatherism is not good. It negates development. No more godfather politics in Rivers State. We are not in Lagos State. Rivers State will not accept godfatherism. My concern is to do well for Rivers State.

“For the over three years that we have managed Rivers State, nobody of good conscience will say that we have not done well. We are not threatened because in Rivers State, PDP is a dominant party,” he said.

He also declared that he will not be vying for the position of vice president, as being speculated in certain quarters.

Governor Wike agreed that some presidential aspirants seeking his support have offered him the position in the course of political consultations.

Speaking in an interview with The Osasu Show at the Government House Port Harcourt, Governor Wike said: “There are aspirants who have promised me the position of the vice president, but I said I will not seek the position. Not even in the dream will I seek that position at this point. I am a first term governor and the National Chairman of PDP is from my State and the South-South.

“These are mere allegations. People can carry rumours, but everything I will do will be in the interest of Rivers State. Nobody can use Rivers State as a tool. They did that in the past, but not anymore.”

He said the decision to host the October 5 National Convention in Port Harcourt was initiated without his knowledge, adding that he eventually attended a meeting where governors and presidential aspirants ratified the resolution.

He expressed surprise that a few presidential aspirants, who never opposed the decision have turned around to sponsor reports against the venue of the convention.

“When we say that there are moles among the presidential aspirants, this is one of the manifestations. A decision that is collectively taken is being contested through clandestine sponsorship.

“But, if they want, the National Convention can be held at Maiduguri, Yola, Sokoto, Jigawa, Kano or any other city. A presidential aspirant that would lose would lose.

“All the national delegates that will vote at the National Convention will emerge from the different local government areas of the country and from the statutory delegates list. None will be elected in Port Harcourt. Therefore, it is uncharitable to attempt to create the impression that hosting it in Port Harcourt will influence the outcome.”

Man Who Raised a Lad Since 2 Years, Celebrates His 12th Year

A man, Matthew Segun, celebrated his adopted son who turned 12. He was grateful to God for sparing the boy's life since his "unknown" mother  left him since he was 2 years old. The man who said he was still a student when he took up the responsibility of fathering the child was full of thanks to God for helping him thus far. On his Twitter handle, he tweets:

"Happy 12th birthday to you Bólúwatifẹ́.
He's abandoned by d Mother at age2.
Took up the challenges while studying.
I was responsible 4 almost everything, today I thank God I was & still a responsible Father.
Don't just father a Child,be responsible too."

BREAKING: Police File Charges Against PDP Governorship Candidate Adeleke

The Nigeria police force has filed charges against a governorship aspirant in the upcoming Osun State election, Senator Ademola Adeleke, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The charges against the Senator include examination malpractice, aiding and abetting, impersonation, and criminal conspiracy.

The School Principal of Ojo-Aro Community High School, Egbedore Local Government Area, Osun State, and three others are also to be arraigned for what the police describes as conspiracy with the Senator.

Police spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, told journalists on Wednesday that investigations revealed that Senator Adeleke and his brother Sikiru Adeleke registered and sat for the National Examination Council Examination (NECO) 2017 as internal candidates, impersonating students of the school at the ages of 57 and 42 years respectively.

The police added that Senator Ademola Adeleke had made a cautionary statement and admitted that he registered for the 2017 NECO examinations as an internal student in the said school but did not sit for the examination.

Moshood explained further that both Senator Ademola Adeleke and his brother Sikiru Adeleke’ s pictures were captured in the school’s photo book of 2017 but no NECO seal was found on their photos, unlike the rest of the students.

Buhari does not understand governance, Saraki insists

Senate President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant, Dr. Bukola Saraki yesterday said Nigerians made mistake by voting President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 and warned against such in 2019.
He said having worked with the President for over three and half years, he can categorically say that Buhari “does not understand governance and was not prepared for governance of the country when he was elected in 2015.”

Saraki, who stated this while addressing Oyo State delegates and members of the party ahead of the national convention of the PDP at the state secretariat of the party in Molete, Ibadan, said Nigeria needs a “digital President”.

The former governor of Kwara State, who was accompanied by Senator Rafiu Ibrahim, Senator Abiodun Olujinmi, Captain Idris Wada, Dr. Doyin Okupe and Muhammed Wakil, noted that the mistake Nigerians have made over the years was electing people into positions of authority based on sentiment.

He specifically maintained that the country needed a digital President who can relate well with presidents of other countries.

He declared that he is the most capable for the work among the PDP presidential aspirants and urged Oyo State delegates to support his aspiration.

He said: “The major mistake we are making is that we vote people who cannot do it. All other countries, they look for the best candidates. If you look at other aspirants, you will see that I can do better than all of them.

“The mistake we made is that the person who is there does not know anything. The person that is there does not understand governance.

“If you have observed, you will discover that presidents of other countries who have visited Nigeria in recent time did not sleep in the country. They will just come for two or few hours and go back.”

The Senate President said that what the country needs in 2019 is a capable president, as Buhari has shown that he is not capable for the task.

NASS passes fourth version of Electoral Act Amendment Bill

The Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Assembly on Electoral Matters on Tuesday passed the fourth version of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

Before Tuesday, President Muhammadu Buhari had withdrawn assent three times.

The joint Senate and House of Representatives Committee on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, while briefing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, denied removing the Electronic Card Reader, with which voters are accredited during elections, from the bill.

The committee explained that it had only harmonised versions of the legislation and passed them as a fourth bill.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission, Senator Suleiman Nazif, who doubles as chairman of the joint committee, recalled the reasons cited by Buhari for rejecting the bill on different occasions as well as what the lawmakers consequently did on the legislation.

The lawmaker described the bill as “an issue of utmost national importance.”

Nazif said in part, “It is an opportunity for Nigerians to hear what we have done, how far we have gone, what transpired from the first Electoral Act Amendment Bill, to the second one, the third one and now to the fourth one.

“I also want to assure colleagues and Nigerians that this joint committee is committed to ensuring that it strengthens INEC and at the same time, the National Assembly is also committed to deepening democracy in Nigeria. I also want to use this opportunity to assure Nigerians and everyone here that the National Assembly and indeed the executive are on the same page with respect to this amendment bill.

“I am sure that you must have heard different versions. I will put everything in a very clear picture so that Nigerians will know that all of us are working towards strengthening INEC and ensuring that 2019 (election) is done is a free and fair electoral process, and even beyond. Therefore, I will like to assure Nigerians that we are working very hard and we have come to the conclusion, and you will hear the details right now.”

Suspected cult groups threaten to kill SSS Director, Police Commissioner, others in Cross River

The Vikings and Skylo cult groups have threatened to attack security chiefs in Cross River State over the arrest and detention of their members.

In a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday, the groups listed the security chiefs to be attacked to include, the Director of State Security Service, Commissioner of Police in Cross River State, Commander of the 13 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Calabar.

Others listed were: the State Attorney General, some members in Governor Ayade’s administration, Hon Mike Obi, Mr Oliver Orok, Secretary to the State Government, State Chief Judge, State Chief Registrar and Mr Frank Ayade.

The statement jointly signed by seven members of the two groups, Udom Ekpo, Asuquo Daniel, Etim Udoeyop, Ikang Damong, Francis Okon, Emmanuel Okon and Asuquo Francis, lamented the condition of their members in SSS custody.

“We have heard of all what is happening with members of Virkins and Skilo confraternities. They were arrested in Obudu and brought to Calabar by Police and State Security Service.

“We want to let you know that we are going to kill the Director of State Security Service in this State. We are going to assassinate the Commissioner of Police. We are going to make Cross River State ungovernable for Prof Ben Ayade and his aides.

“We are giving the government 24 hours to release Mr Effiong Ekarika and Ebok Obong, Chairman of Vikings and Skylo with immediate effect.

“If not, we are going to cause mayhem and breakdown of law and order. We are going to kill or kidnap Chief of Staff, Mr Orim. Just watch out and see what is going to happen. We have mobilised our boys and ammunition for this assignment,” the groups stated.

The groups further alleged that one of their leaders, who is a serving member in the President Muhammadu Buhari administration would come to their rescue in case of any untold hardship

Reacting, the Clans Club International charged Gov. Ben Ayade and other security chiefs in the state not to succumb to threat by miscreants to terminate the lives of top government functionaries in the state.

In a communiqué to mark the 32nd anniversary of the group in Calabar, president of the club in the state, Dr. Fred Obeten, stated that it was wrong for any individual or group of persons to threaten a government, which is the soul repository of the coercive powers of the state.

“We call on government not to succumb to cheap blackmail but do all within its powers to bring the promoters of such terrorist activities to book speedily.

Tambuwal discloses decision he will take if he fails to emerge as PDP Presidential candidate

The Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, on Tuesday, assured that he will accept the outcome of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Presidential primary.

Tambuwal, a PDP Presidential aspirant made the disclosure in Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital while meeting with stakeholders of the party as part of his familiarisation visit ahead of the primary, NAN reports.

According to Tambuwal, “I deem it appropriate to start the visit with Kebbi State being my home as Sokoto and Zamfara.

“Our party is still consulting the stakeholders on who to present to contest for the presidential position.

‘‘If the consultation fails, we will do the primary and I will accept the outcome and support whoever emerges as our candidate.

“I had left PDP for APC in view of the situation we found ourselves under PDP in the last government and joined APC for our conviction and presumption that the party would do the expected.’’

Kano Assembly Confirms Gawuna As New Deputy Governor

The Kano State Assembly has confirmed  Nasiru Gawuna as the new Kano Deputy Governor.

Gawuna’s nomination was confirmed after screening by the Kano Assembly on Tuesday.

He was nominated by the state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, following the resignation of the former Deputy Governor, Hafiz Abubakar.

The former deputy governor claimed disrespect of his office and unjust treatment by the governor necessitated his resignation from office.

According to Abubakar,it was his desire to remain in office until the end of his tenure as deputy governor, but due to irreconcilable differences with governor Ganduje, he chose to resign.

However, Gawuna, before his confirmation, was the Commissioner for Agriculture and a two-term Nasarawa Local Govt Chairman.

Zidane would want Hazard and Kante at Manchester United

If Zinedine Zidane was to be hired as Manchester United manager, the former Real Madrid boss would want to sign Eden Hazard and N'Golo Kante, according to Don Balon.
The Frenchman wanted to sign the pair during his time in Madrid, but neither side was sanctioned by the club throughout Zidane's run.
Zidane would also want to hold on to Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial, two fellow Frenchman that have had their difficulties under Jose Mourinho.

Watch List: Fayose Slams EFCC Vows To Remain In PDP

Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of putting his name on a watch list.

The governor described the alleged move as petty especially as he has already informed the anti-graft agency of his willingness to answer any questions they may have for him when he leaves office.

Governor Fayose also denied claims that he plans to fly out of the country as soon as his tenure ends and insists that despite intimidation by the EFCC he will remain in the PDP.

In a tweet on Sunday, the governor said the anti-graft agency should expect him after he hands over power on October 16, as he earlier promised. He added that he is not afraid of being investigated.

2019: We’re on our knees begging Obasanjo to back Atiku – Group

Supporters of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, have pleaded with former President Olusegun Obasanjo to settle his political differences with his former deputy to allow him (Atiku) have a smooth ride in 2019 general election.

Atiku was Obasanjo’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007 when the former President’s alleged third term ambition was said to have caused bad blood between two of them, with Obasanjo said to have allegedly sworn that over his dead body would Atiku become President of Nigeria.

Addressing journalists in Kaduna at the weekend, Atiku’s supporters under the umbrella of Reset Foundation, said they were practically on their knees, begging Obasanjo to give his blessing and support to Atiku to become the nation’s next president.

Chairman of the Foundation, Amos Jayramos said Obasanjo should take note that of all the presidential aspirants, only Atiku has what it takes to win the presidency.

Jayramos said, “It is natural for two people to hurt each other, disagree and agree, and reconcile.

“So, we are practically on our knees begging former President Olusegun Obasanjo to settle his political differences with his former deputy, Atiku Abubakar, and give him the necessary support to allow Atiku become the next President of this country.

“We believe that with Obasanjo supporting Atiku, there will be no problem for Atiku winning the forthcoming presidential election, and if he wins, the issue of insecurity will become a thing of the past, and the entire country will be better for it.

“Atiku has 101 reasons to be president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“We believe that if he is given the privilege to serve, he will provide dividends of democracy to every Nigerian home.

“In this regard, we call on all good people of Nigeria to join this movement in supporting the campaign to actualise this bid of Atiku to be president come 2019”.

The Foundation, according to its leader, was inaugurated about six months ago with the objective to support a presidential aspirant, “Who will ensure a new Nigeria with an enabling environment for business to thrive, a new Nigeria where merit is rewarded, graduates are gainfully employed without ethnic, religious barriers.

“We are looking forward to a new Nigeria where citizens have the liberty to exercise their rights as enshrine in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria irrespective of tribe, religion or political affiliation.

“We are therefore calling on all Nigerians who are desirous of a secured nation to preach the gospel of Atiku to all eligible voters in order to effect a better change we are all yearning for in 2019".

OPINION: Mixed Metaphors: Hypocrisy in high places By Sonala Olumhense

First, the good news.  Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, was on Friday reported to have resigned from the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

In July, Adeosun was credibly exposed by Premium Times as having forged her National Youth Service Corps certificate.  But the government, lurching from one ethical scandal to another, retained her.

On Friday, The PUNCH, breaking the resignation news, observed that the minister was in her office in the morning, and her resignation did not appear to have taken effect.

It is a shame that a certificate-forger emerged Minister of Finance in the first place, an indication of the weakness of the anti-corruption claims of the government.  Nonetheless, I commend her for finally taking herself out of the equation, an action Buhari’s complicit government could not find the courage to undertake.

Meanwhile, Amina Mohammed, a former Minister and now Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, has criticized her former employers about Nigeria’s burgeoning debt.

Speaking at the International Monetary Fund last Tuesday, she expressed regret that Nigeria has returned to gross indebtedness despite the debt relief she secured (with the Paris Club) in 2005.

As is usual with Nigeria, Mrs. Mohammed spoke with two tongues, eager to sound good in the ears of the international community.

Full disclosure: I have consistently criticized Ms. Mohammed in this column for being part of the problem.  For several years she managed Nigeria’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) portfolio, with a budget of at least $5bn over five years.  I have asked (and demanded that Nigerians ask) where that money was spent.

The old trick still works, Madame: go to Afghanistan…or Myanmar…don’t make hypocrisy sound so educated!

Speaking of drawing attention, Buhari has accepted a N45m gift of a shadowy political group called the Nigeria Consolidation Ambassadors Network (NCAN), which paid for his All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primaries forms.

The group, in a clear scam, made the payment only one day after the formal announcement of dates for the APC primaries.

It's a shame that a president of a democracy would accept a gift of this nature from a dubious and dangerous source.  First, it makes the acceptance of expensive gifts by public officials appear to be legitimate; and then it downplays the danger that such people might demand that office-holder repay, in appointments and contracts, for instance. In 2003, it was revealed the Anambra State governor had rigged the governorship election.  That gentleman is the current Minister for Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, and the governorship election had been paid for by his political godfather, Chief Andy Uba!

The present APC nonsense arises from the fiction that Buhari, being “incorrupt and poor,” cannot afford the absurd cost of the forms imposed by his own party.

Everyone knows this is a lie: the high cost is in place to limit the number of those, particularly the young, who might seek to challenge the president.

And no, Buhari can no longer be—if he ever was—thought of as a poor man.   To begin with, if he can accept this gift in public, what has he accepted in private from the likes of NCAN and individuals?  Next, Buhari’s bills are being borne by the taxpayers; meaning he has tons of savings.  Third, two of Buhari’s children went to school in England at the same time, for which he paid fees, flight tickets and charges—consecutively—and rented or bought a home.   That is not the spending profile of a poor man.   It may also be recalled that in December 2017, one of those children, Yusuf, was involved in an idle-rich motorbike speed-racing accident on an Abuja street.  Each of his two bikes was reported to have cost $314,000; if the president sold the remaining one, he could easily have afforded the nomination forms without the presidency being put at the mercy of faceless philanthropists who may be drug-dealers, kidnappers or oil manipulators.

In Gangs as political parties on August 12 I commented on the firing of Lawal Daura, the Director-General of the Department of State Services over his attempt to take over the National Assembly.

“Mercifully he was away last week when Daura fell,” I wrote of Buhari, “but [he] will be back, and I predict he will find a way to appease his kinsman, as he did former Secretary to the Government Babachir Lawal, a man who had no compunction about starving IDPs and babies to death.”

Following weeks of speculation that Buhari might return Daura to the post or have him replaced by someone more “acceptable,” the president on Thursday named Yusuf Magaji Bichi to the chair.  He took over the following day from Matthew Seiyefa, who had been serving in an acting capacity by Osinbajo.

It is no surprise that the Bichi appointment—which again means that 16 of the 17 service chiefs are from the North—immediately attracted outrage from the South and Middle Belt.

“Since 1960, Nigeria has never had a leader more sectional, narrow, parochial and tribalistic like the current president who went on a global stage to divide Nigeria into 97 per cent and 5 per cent,” said leaders of South- South, South-West, South-East and Middle Belt in a joint statement, stressing that Bichi’s job-qualification in no way compares with Seiyefa’s.

Bichi’s appointment is also an indirect rebuke of Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, either for undertaking Daura’s landmark removal or for the replacement he chose, or both.  It is also a grievous embarrassment of those northerners who had higher and broader expectations of Buhari as a Nigerian, and who understand that the best interests of the North are not served by Buhari’s pandering to unnecessary sectionalism.

In other words, Buhari does not speak for the North, but for a corrupt power cabal which seeks federal power but lacks a sense of federal responsibility.

On Buhari speaking for anyone: APC announced during the week that he will not be defending himself or advancing his own re-election in presidential debates ahead of next year’s election.

“Vice President Yomi Osinbajo will be representing President Muhammadu Buhari in all the Nigerian Presidential debates towards the 2019 general election,” the party said.

APC did not seem to understand that in a presidential system, the president debates; while the vice-president participates in debates involving vice-presidential candidates.  Osinbajo cannot speak for Buhari and for himself in the same election.

But APC, shameless, described Buhari as having “nothing to debate with anyone.”

It is a shame that a man recently labelled as “lifeless” by American President Donald Trump, is providing a critical illustration of that evaluation.  Everywhere else, leaders seeking re-election are happy to affirm the validity of their ambition, an opportunity and responsibility Buhari appears to be scared of.

Nigeria has thus come full circle: from a leader swearing to be the answer to that leader morphing into the question.  Surrounded and boosted by greed, indifference, myopia, nepotism and gamesmanship, Buhari goes into the 2019 election as the limping, incapable, grossly-overrated incumbent.

Buyer beware: If you advocate or vote Buhari, you write your own epitaph: “Here lies the fool who closed his eyes and sold his soul.”

I cannot be impeached, I’ll never step down as Senate president —Saraki

Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has boasted that he can never be impeached, saying All Progressives Congress, APC, championing the cause is in minority and does not have the powers to carry out the threat. He also made it clear that he would never step down as Senate president as demanded by the APC. According to him, succumbing to such calls will only amount to sacrificing the national interest of the country for personal interest.

Saraki, who spoke in an interview with newsmen in Minna, Niger State, as part of his presidential campaign, yesterday, said:  “The APC members know that we are in the majority and whatever they want to do they know that they don’t have the number. “The other kite they are trying to fly is asking me to step down from my seat but I can tell you that this cannot be possible as I will not step down. “One thing is very clear and that is to say that I will not sacrifice the interest of the country for my personal interest and in the last three years as a Senate president, I have demonstrated that my interest is second to that of the nation.” He condemned the calls from various quarters on the Senate to suspend its recess and resume, adding that it was a collective decision by all members to adjourn and that the recess was under the ambit of law. He said the National Assembly has, therefore, not contravened any section of the procedures in embarking on the recess and  reconvene when it was time to resume from break. IBB assures Saraki on his presidential ambition Meanwhile, former Nigeria Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd), has assured Saraki on his presidential ambition saying: “It is my turn to do what your father did to me.” Babangida, who made this known when Saraki visited him as part of his campaign tour for the forthcoming Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, convention, said he would treat the Senate presidential aspirant as his own son. IBB said:  “I remember when I was still in office, I spoke with your father, Oloye Saraki, who was always providing advice on a number of things attached to this country. “He always made himself available to me, to give advice and encouragement, which will move the country forward. Your visit today is historical, now it is your time and turn to come to me and I will do just that.” “You mentioned three things that are very dear to us as military, and we fought to get them to preserve them. They are unity of the country, the security of lives and economic development. “The security of the people and the well being of the ordinary man are the right objectives for campaign and leadership for this country.” Earlier, Saraki had told Babangida that Nigeria was now at a crossroad, adding that what the country needed now was a leader that could unite everybody. He vowed to fight poverty and secure the life and property of all Nigerians, if voted as the President of the country next year.

Deputy Speaker, Lasun speaks on dumping APC for PDP

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Sulaimon Lasun Yusuff, on Sunday dismissed report that he had defected from the ruling All Progressives Party (APC), to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Lasun in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Wole Oladimeji‎, and made available to newsmen in Abuja, described the alleged defection to the PDP as “highly misleading and uncalled for.”

The statement reads: “Lasun has said it repeatedly that he is progressive to the core and remains in APC as loyal party man to the core .

“It is the machinations of his political distractors who are head bent in maligning his political image that is spreading the rumour.

“A silence does not mean that he has left the party, the rumour recently being spread is by his political distractors.”

Tinubu’s ‘ anointed candidate’, Sanwo-Olu, officially declares readiness to unseat Ambode

Babajide Sanwo-Olu has formally announced his bid to seek the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 Lagos governorship election.

He made his intention known on Sunday while addressing his supporters at City Hall, Lagos.

The development means he will contest for the APC ticket against his principal, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

The aspirant is the Managing Director of Lagos State Development and Property Corporation, LSDPC, a parastatal under Lagos State Government.

He is believed to have the backing of Mandate Movement, a group loyal to Bola Tinubu, national leader of the party.

Sanwo-Olu said he will make Lagos the “greatest, most vibrant city on the African continent, taking its rightful place in the comity of states around the globe”.

His words: “I have a vision for a Lagos with modern and affordable transport system, impeccable public health facilities, world class educational institutions, where we succeed in educating and skilling our youth, especially our children.

“A vision for a Lagos where our children are educated and our youth are highly-skilled, healthy, free of hunger, illiteracy, disease and destitution.

“There’s a lot of work to be done to achieve the Lagos of our dream.”

Sanwo-Olu added that he, “will be a good party man and run an inclusive government”.

Amaechi to Abe: ‘I’m not your leader; your claim cheap, shameful’

The Minister of Transportation and Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State and the South-South zone, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has repudiated comments  credited to the senator representing Rivers South-East in the National Assembly, Magnus Abe, wherein Abe was quoted as saying that Amaechi is his leader. Senator Magnus Abe and Transport Minister, Chibuike Amaechi Amechi, in a statement on Sunday, described the claim by Senator Abe as being nothing less that cheap, shameful and political sophistry. Last week, at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja, Sen. Abe reportedly told newsmen that Amaechi is his Leader. However, Amaechi, the immediate past governor of Rivers State, pointedly said he is not Abe’s leader. The transport Minister however asked the senator to stop deceiving the public. Amaechi, in the statement, wondered how, according to him, a member who “wakes up and creates an imaginary parallel party executive” and go  ahead “to open an office for the non-existent parallel executive that has no base and foundation,” could claim to be his follower. Amaechi also said that it was very doubtful if Senator Abe is not working against the APC, saying, “As a matter of fact, his actions are obviously targeted at weakening and destroying the party.” According to Amaechi, “I am not Magnus Abe’s leader. Abe has long left me and the political family that is largely responsible for his rise and fame in politics,” Amaechi said in a statement released by his Media Office over the weekend. “How can I be Abe’s leader when he and the minions sponsored by him (Abe), privately and publicly abuses, insults, cast aspersions etc on me, my wife and members of my family, daily? Is that how a follower treats his Leader? “It’s cheap and indeed shameful political sophistry for Abe to stand in the APC secretariat and deceitfully say I am his Leader, while all he has done, both privately and publicly in recent times is to undermine me, the APC and desecrate the APC in Rivers State. As a matter of fact, it is indeed very doubtful if Senator Abe is still in the APC. He mouths APC but his actions belie his words and clearly tell a different story. “A man who wakes up, create an imaginary parallel party executive and went ahead to open an office for the non-existent parallel executive, that has no base and foundation, cannot be said to be committed, in anyway, to the party. As a matter of fact, his actions are obviously targeted at weakening and destroying the party.” “Such a hypocritical, devious character cannot be my follower. I am not his Leader,” the statement concluded.”

DIG, eight commissioners, 40,000 policemen for Osun election

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has dispatched eight Commissioners of Police, 40,000 personnel including two helicopters, 30 armoured personnel carriers and 300 patrol vehicles for the Osun governorship election holding on September 22.

The police spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, explained that the security operation would be coordinated by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Operations, Joshak Habila, who would be assisted by an AIG and eight CPs.

Moshood in a statement in Abuja on Sunday said the personnel on the ground comprised the Police Mobile Force, Counter-Terrorism Unit; the Special Protection Unit; the Anti Bomb Squad; conventional policemen; the Armament Unit, personnel of Federal Investigation and Intelligence Department, IGP Monitoring, IGP Intelligence Response teams, the Sniffer dogs section and the Mounted Troop.

“Four unarmed policeman and two others from other security agencies will be on duty at each voting point throughout the state.

“ The DIG, Department of Operations has been deployed in the state and already on ground. He will be assisted by an Assistant Inspector-General of Police and eight Commissioners of Police and other senior officers. Each of the eight police area commands in Osun State will be manned by a Commissioner of Police,” the statement said.

As part of measures to ensure a credible election, Moshood said the IG will on Monday (Today) attend a stakeholders and peace accord meeting with Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman and officials, 48 political parties participating in the election and their torchbearers, election observers and other accredited stakeholders in Osogbo, Osun State.

He warned against vote-buying, adding that the force would deal with anyone found engaging in the criminal act.

“Security agencies have been trained to deal with in accordance with the law anybody or group, agents of political parties or their sponsor(s) who engage or attempt vote-buying and selling during the election,” the police warned.

Osun lawmaker caught taking ritual bath inside bush at night

The Majority Leader of the Osun State House of Assembly, Honorable Timothy Owoeye, was allegedly caught taking a ‘ritual’ bath inside a bush at Osunjela area of Osogbo, capital of Osun State in the dead of the night.

Some youths in the community caught the legislators at the bath. Some of the youth said he was bathing with blood but they could not ascertain whether it was human or animal blood.

The youths beat up the politician, seized his clothes and recorded him naked on their phones.

The politician was said to have negotiated with the youths and promised them certain things before they returned his clothes and released him.

He eventually gave some to certain people as promised.

The lawmaker later reported to the matter to the police and several people in the community were arrested for collecting money from the politician in a fraudulent manner.

Ambode Goes Cap in Hand to Tinubu for Second Term Bid.

CREDIT: PUNCH NEWSPAPER

The confusion over the reelection bid of Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, failed to clear off on Saturday as the All Progressives Congress national leadership could not secure a firm commitment from its national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on governor’s second term ambition.

The APC leaders, led by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and the party’s National  Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, who were said to be acting on the directives of President Muhammadu Buhari, met with Tinubu again to prevail on him to “forgive” Ambode his alleged infractions and back the governor to secure a second term.

A source close to the national secretariat of the party, however, told SUNDAY PUNCH that the effort of the leaders could not be said to have resolved the situation as Tinubu did not give Osinbajo and Oshiomhole any specific promise of supporting Ambode for a second term.

The source stated, “The President asked the vice-president and the national chairman to resolve the crisis amicably so that the governor could get a second term. Osinbajo met Tinubu twice in Abuja on Friday on Ambode’s matter, where he relayed the President’s message and the need to keep Lagos for the APC.

He also told Asiwaju the President would not want the crisis to affect the party in the 2019 general elections.

“The National Leader, however, maintained that there would be wider consultations back home before he would be able to accede to the request. He said the governor’s matter is beyond him alone.

“It is difficult to say what happened during the second meeting with Osinbajo but it appeared the vice-president and Tinubu were able to arrive at a meeting point, which is difficult to clarify.”

It was gathered that Buhari’s foremost concern was that the crisis in Lagos State, which boasts of the highest number of registered voters, if not well-managed, could affect his political calculations for his second term bid.

SUNDAY PUNCH gathered that as the APC leaders battled to save the embattled governor’s second term ambition, Ambode landed in Tinubu’s house in Abuja, where the governor appealed to the former Lagos State governor to forgive him his alleged offences.

Another very reliable party source said, “Yes, it was part of the efforts we are making from this end to save the party from crisis in the state and the nation. The governor came to beg Tinubu in his residence in Abuja to forgive him. I think the appeal helped to reduce the tension and soften the ground for the governor. It is, however, difficult to say if that had ended the crisis.

“Some governors have also called the national leader, pleading with him to save their ‘poster boy’ the humiliation of not getting a second term. Their fears are that such development in Lagos, which is the economic nerve centre of the country, could have negative effect on the fortunes of the party in other states.”

I’ve slept with a Nigerian senator, church ministers –Kenny Brandmuse
A source in the camp of the Lagos ex-governor, who spoke to SUNDAY PUNCH on Saturday, confirmed the meeting between Tinubu and his political godson in Abuja.

“Yes, the meeting held. He (Ambode) saw Asiwaju in Abuja but I cannot give you any detail,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu, Tinubu’s loyalists hold Lagos declaration rally today

It was learnt that Tinubu returned to Lagos on Saturday as preparations for the rally and formal declaration of an APC governorship aspirant in the state, Mr. Jide Sanwo-Olu, were being concluded.

The organisers of the rally, billed for City Hall, Lagos Island, on Sunday, had concluded that 1,000 supporters be mobilised from each of the local government areas in the state for the rally.

SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that after the return of Tinubu from Abuja, the chairmen of the local governments held another crucial meeting at Watercress Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, on “new development” concerning the Sunday event.

A source at the meeting, who is an aide of one of the council chairmen, told SUNDAY PUNCH that the chairmen were informed that while the rally for Sanwo-Olu would still go ahead on Sunday, the chairmen should no longer “mobilise” 1,000 supporters from their local governments.

“No, the rally has not been called off. The chairmen are in the meeting, but the latest information is that they should no longer mobilise 1,000 people from the councils. Those to attend the rally are the leaders from the ward to the state level; the state and federal legislators and party chiefs,” he said.

One of the aides of Tinubu told one of our correspondents that the rally would still go ahead as planned on Sunday.

“That’s the grand declaration. It’s going ahead; nothing has changed,” he said.

Another source, a former member of the state House of Assembly, however, said the reduction in the number of those to attend the rally was a crowd control strategy at the venue.

“You know the way our people behave. Even the supporters, who are meant to attend, will get to the venue before the organisers,” he stated.

The former lawmaker, however, said the latest information on the battle to save Ambode’s job was that nothing had changed from the resolve of party stakeholders in the state to see off the Epe-born technocrat.

“As of this afternoon, what we heard was that Asiwaju has not agreed (to back Ambode). I don’t know what happened in the evening o; things might have changed,” he said.

A lawmaker, who spoke to SUNDAY PUNCH on Saturday, argued that while the embattled governor had not shown enough political sagacity in handling the affairs of the party leaders in the state, it would be in the interest of the APC to resolve its festering crisis amicably.

He added, “It was the same crisis we faced in the day of (Babatunde) Fashola until we were able to block the funneling of money to the Labour Party by one of our leaders.

“Don’t forget that we lost some seats to the PDP in the last elections. We knew what we had to do to bring some of them back to the APC.

“So, it is in the interest of the party to resolve this crisis to prevent such crack again.”

Epe Christians, Muslims, others organise prayers to save son’s job

Meanwhile, it was learnt that some segments of Epe, the hometown of Ambode, had embarked on prayers to save the head of their son, whom they believed had positively contributed to the modernisation of the ancient town.

The prayers, it was learnt, cut across Muslims, Christians and traditional worshippers.

The Olu-Epe of Epe town, Oba Sefiu Olatunji Adewale, attended a special Islamic vigil organised by the Muslim Community at the Epe Central Mosque, on Friday night and lasted till the early hours on Sunday.

The prayer session is an annual programme meant to pray for the general well-being of all Epe indigenes.

A resident of the community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told SUNDAY PUNCH that notable indigenes of the town, especially Muslims, attended the prayer session.

Asked if special prayers were offered for the governor, the source said, “Definitely, he (Ambode) would be the special focus of such prayers at this time.

“Everybody in the town wants him to return for a second term and we are not happy with his current predicament.”

“The Christians and traditional worshippers have also joined in the prayers. If we miss this opportunity, only God knows when Epe will have the same opportunity again.

“In this place, everybody is for Ambode; no division. That is why you don’t see any of the chairmen from this area in the meetings that had been held on this crisis. The seven Epe chairmen were not at the Watercress Hotel meeting on Saturday either.

“If anyone is believed to be against Ambode, the person could go missing, either now or later.”
